Ottawa Citizen ePaper App Reviews

Complete Rubbish for iPhone

This app is completely inappropriate for the iPhone by trying to display the full print version of the newspaper on the small screen, requiring a user to zoom in to discern even the tag lines. Another serious drawback is the requirement to dowload the issues before you can see anything. This may be useful to read backissues of magazines, but this is not how most read newspaper articles. The previous app was much better at showing the latest news and should be reinstated. Not sure how the OC came to think this is better, but I will likely be looking elsewhere for news on my iPhone, as this app does not work for me. 2nd Entry: I am unable to authorize under the same subscription login that I used with the previous App and with my PC browser! Was it your intension to cut all your subscribers off?

I echo the sentiment

This isnt worth the time to download. Ive already removed it. B-bye Ottawa Citizen

Worst News App Ever

Avoid this app at all costs. It is clunky, difficult to navigate, and has very limited content.

Cant Login

Useless app. Doesnt recognize my login yet the same login works for the digital access portion. This is AFTER the update. Dont waste your time.

Not very good

Very difficult to navigate and hard to find things like local news. To top it all off since Ottawa is such a boring place, where nothing happens on Sunday, there is no newspaper and the ipad app is not updated! Even the comics which sometimes make the most sense in the Citizen have been cut down, changed especially on Saturday.

Avoid this app.

Downloaded on my iPad. Wont open. Cant delete it. Almost like a virus. Avoid this until they fix it.

Does not recognize my subscription.

I cant download the new edition on my phone, yet, I am a subscriber to the Citizen and have been for the past couple of years.

$1.99 an issue is ridiculous

How is it that the Toronto star is $.99 but the Ottawa citizen epaper is $1.99?????? And you wonder why you loosing readership!

Crossword numbers dont print

Since the IOS8 update the numbers for the crossword clues are no longer visible when sent to a printer. This update to the Ottawa Citizen app doesnt correct the problem. PressReaders app has the same issue.

Too many glitches

Many times trying to read the on-line Citizen on iPad is an exercise in frustration. Too often the paper will not download. The "download latest issue" button will not be highlighted, indicating its not working. When you can download the paper, tapping on the blue, high-lighted title of an article to bring it up in larger font will sometimes take you to another article. On iPhone, you can be reading an article and suddenly youre switched to another page. This can happen more than once when reading an article. At that point, you just give up. They really need to do better.

Inconsistent

This app is inconsistent. The ability to touch the blue highlight area to bring up an article and the function to read in book mode is not always available. For example the Sat Jan 31 2015 edition. Also, the yellow arrow which brings the reader to the rest of an article continued on inside pages does not always respond. If these issues are not fixed, I will cancel my subscription.

Cant download

UPDATE (Version 3.4.2): The downloading is fixed, but the other problems are not. Deleting a paper does not make space on the device - I have 5 papers on my device, taking up 12.3GB! Ack! Before the change, I was using PressReader to download the Citizen ePaper and it worked well. Since the change, I cant download anything. Im sure this is a PressReader issue, but it takes forever to download a paper, and it downloads in chunks. I wait 10 minutes at 0% then it jumps up to 40% and gets stuck. Then it jumps up again. The paper takes minimum 30-40 minutes to download. Fix your app and servers!

Puzzle

Unlike the USA Today app,one cant do the crossword on the app itself

Not bad, but major storage issues

The app is working well for me now. However, the storage issues are profoundly annoying. I will set the papers to delete after 7 days, however, they seem to remain on the iPad (invisible) and take up space. Even when I manually delete all the papers with the "Edit" option in the app, they dont delete. I just deleted all the papers in the app, but it was still taking up 4.3GB! You have to uninstall and then re-install the app. All PressReader Daily paper apps seem to have this bug...
